People who are abusive frequently exhibit “warning signs” of this type of future behavior. One or two signs do not make someone an abuser, but beware of someone who shows multiple warning signs.

These are some of the warning signs of abusive behaviors:

bulletRidicule
bulletAccusations
bulletBlaming
bulletHumiliation
bulletLying
bulletWithholding information
bulletInfidelity
bulletUnreasonable jealousy
bulletWithholding money or use of the car
bulletInterference with work
bulletIntimidation
bulletThreats of violence
bulletDestroying possessions

 

The following are warning signs of unhealthy behaviors:

Loss of temper on a frequent basis

bulletPhysical fighting
bulletSignificant vandalism or property damage
bulletIncrease in use of drugs or alcohol
bulletIncrease in risk-taking behavior
bulletDetailed plans to commit acts of violence
bulletEnjoyment of hurting animals
bulletSerious drug or alcohol use
bulletGang membership or strong desire to be in a gang
bulletFascination with weapons, especially guns
bulletTrouble controlling feelings like anger
bulletWithdrawal from friends and usual activities
bulletFeeling rejected or alone
bulletPoor school or employment performance
bulletHistory of disciplinary problems or frequent run-ins with authorities
bulletFeeling constantly disrespected
bulletFailing to acknowledge the feelings or rights of others
bullet

A history of violent or aggressive behavior
